Teambuilding in Theth

After a difficult period of lockdown around the world, we are returning to the noisy life in the workplace with small and safe steps. During the lockdown period, we worked with great dedication remotely, thus succeeding in completing our tasks. Online dating, lots of emails, lots of virtual communications were part of this difficult period which opened in front of us another perspective for the digital world.

After this very busy period, Kutia team members decided to visit Theth and spend a weekend together. We had the opportunity to further strengthen the bond between team members and thus spend a pleasant weekend in a magical place like Valbona.

We had a great time together, talking and discussing current issues happening around the world while being part of different team building activities!

Teams do not need to be ‘optimised’, and teamwork does not need ‘enhancement’ or an ‘upgrade’. Teams aren’t machines, they consist of living breathing individuals, and should be handled as such.

Laravel 6.8.0 Released

The Laravel team released a minor version v6.8.0 this week, adding useful test response updates, along with the latest features, changes, and fixes for Laravel 6.x:

ArrayAccess on Responses
Taylor Otwell Implemented ArrayAccess on JsonResponse and TestResponse classes. Having array access is convenient if you want to get JSON data in a test or JsonResponse instance. Taylor summarized how this could be useful in pull request (#30817):

When building / testing and JSON API, I like to sometimes interact with the raw JSON payload returned in the response. Normally you would have to access this via $response->original[‘foo’]; however, with this change I implement ArrayAccess on both JsonResponse and TestResponse in order to be able to proxy directly into the response JSON without going through the original property.

Packages Can Use Custom Markdown Mail Themes

Packages can now use custom markdown mail themes. Now, a package could use something like the following example:

Set an Individual Raw Attribute

You can now set raw values for individual model attributes using the setRawAttribute() method:

Similar to models, you can force the creation of controllers with the make:controller command. Forcing is useful if you forget to use the –resource flag and want to recreate the controller:

Web Summit 2019

Recently, our team members attended the Web Summit in Lisbon. It is considered as “The best technology conference on the planet” by Forbes. 

Kutia’s team members had the chance to be a part of this great experience with 1,206 speakers and 22 stages. The course lasted for four days, with topics like data protection, sustainability, and whistle-blowing emerging as the trends of the conference. 

Among the speakers, there were the EU Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager; the Rotating Chairman of Huawei, Guo Ping; Google’s Sustainability Officer, Kate Brandt; and former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Tony Blair.

Astrit, Blerona and Faton at Web Summit

Web Summit is a company from Dublin, Ireland that holds events across the world. Events like this involve Web Summit in Lisbon, Collision in Toronto and RISE in Hong Kong.

This conference gathers the founders and CEOs of technology companies, fast-growing startups, policymakers and heads of state. Simply, they seek to answer the question: where to next?

What we learned?

Faton Selishta, our CTO who attended this event, described this Web Summit as a great experience to learn more:

Web Summit 2019 was a great experience and a great ‘update’ on the latest technology trends.

Some of the main topics we have followed were AI, Machine Learning, 5G and Deep Tech.

From Microsoft we learned about “AI for Good”. Mostly, how AI is improving the world for good (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/ai/ai-for-good ). In addition to this, we had the chance to see many examples of how AI can be used in many areas of life and how can it be understood not only from “tech people” but also other people involved in business, manufacturing, education, finance and many other areas. (Https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/ai/ai-business-school).

From the CTO of  “Amazon” we learned how they are applying ML within “Amazon”. “Amazon” operates hundreds of ML-driven services today, from counterfeit goods discovery to consumer “reviews” management.

We learned how 5G will open up new opportunities for the company, consumers and society for the upcoming years. 

In “deep tech”  some of the topics I followed involved information such as: in 2025, Lilium will launch 100% electric flying cars ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lojpe3lUdFk ). 

In addition to this, we learned how Quantum computers will impact in the years to come, as well as “Brain 2.0” transmitting signals directly from the human brain to the device.

On the other hand, in “Developer’s stage,” AWS introduced some very useful workshops especially  for us as a company, since they relate a lot to the services we offer.

The workshops I followed were about:

– When to use micro-services and when to use monolithic architecture|
– How to create an MPV product with AWS services
– How to create a modern GraphQL API and 
– How do I use ASW ML ready libraries such as speech to text, real-time object and face recognition, offline predictions etc.

Moving to Full Stack JavaScript Development

As a part of the largest technology conference held in Kosovo on October 24-25, 2019, Faton Selishta and Astrit Zeqiri held a presentation on the topic: “Moving to Full Stack JavaScript Development” in the Developer’s Stage.

Starting with the introduction of previously used tech stacks such as: PHP and Javascript jQuery, Laravel and vue.js, WordPress and vue.js/React.js, LAMP tech stack, Faton and Astrit explained the steps to follow and the reasons why “KUTIA” switched to Full Stack  JavaScript Development . 

Why we moved to Full Stack Javascript Development:

One of the main reasons we switched to Full Stack JavaScript was to facilitate the communication between front-end back-end and mobile development teams.

In addition to this, one programming language to rule them all is a great way to achieve more.

Having front-end and back-end developers “speak” the same programming language improves productivity. In this way,  the work accelerates, even with fewer programmers onboard. In addition to bridging the gap between the front and the back end, Javascript offers an environment that welcomes expertise in full-stack development.

Another great reason to switch to JavaScript is writing less code. Writing client-side and server-side logic in the same language produces more reusable code. There’s no duplication of business logic across different languages, which implies writing less code per feature.

Less effort-Faster apps. Great news! There’s less effort and time involved in bridging the client side and the back-end if they’re written in the same language. This is something that causes a major positive impact on  a web developer’s every day work.

Developing with JavaScript also provides an opportunity to share the code base not only between mobile platforms but also React web applications. The framework provides numerous ready-to-apply components that can accelerate the process.

An important part of the presentation was dedicated to explaining what NodeJS is and how to use it, and also developing apps with NodeJS and NestJS.

Nest.JS

  • Javascript Framework: Nest is a Javascript framework for building efficient, scalable Node.js server-side applications.
  • It is built on top of Express and is written in TypeScript (a superset of Javascript).

Why Nest.JS and not Node.JS + Express?

  • Typescript support.
  • Uses Express.JS underneath.

Nest.JS Pros/Cons

Pros: 

  • Modularity
  • Typescript
  • Folder structure heavily based on Angular.JS
  • Combines [OOP, FP, FRP]
  • Relatively easy learning curve

Cons:

  • Lack of documentation
  • Small community
  • Not backed by a large Enterprise

After explaining the pros and cons of Nest.JS, the structure of Nest.JS was explained as below:

Controllers: Handle user requests and return responses
Providers: Plain javascript classes with @Injectable() decorator
Services, Repositories, Factories, Helpers etc.
Modules: A plain javascript class annotated with @Module() decorator
Used to organize the application structure.
Middlewares: A layer between the Http Request and the Route handler (Controller)
Exception Filters, Pipes, Guards, Interceptors, Custom decorators, etc…

The second part of the presentation was dedicated to live coding with NestJS, while Astrit’s advice was to work with both Node and NestJS. He suggested to use TypeScript instead of Vanilla Javascript on projects since it contains many benefits which would help developers in the long run. Astrit emphasized that when Kutia’s back-end developers had to adapt to a new language, they benefited greatly by making the communication with front-end developers easier and the integrations smoother.

KosICT created numerous opportunities to attend various presentations at the Developer’s Stage, where useful presentations were given. “Moving to Full Stack JavaScript Development” was one of the presentations that caught the attention of all those interested in knowing more about JavaScript. As Faton and Astrit gave specific reasons on why  Kutia decided to move to Full Stack JavaScript Development, made this presentation useful and helpful for all the web developers that were present.

Why we use React Js?

What is React JS?

React JS is a JavaScript library used in web development to build interactive elements on websites. But if you’re not familiar with JavaScript or JavaScript libraries, that’s not a helpful definition. So let’s take a step back and deal with those terms first.

WHAT IS A JAVASCRIPT LIBRARY?

From the definition above, you can see how JavaScript plays a critical role in website and web application development. But there are times when you need JavaScript to perform repetitive functions—things like stock animation effects or autocomplete search bar features. Re-coding these functions every time they occur becomes a “reinventing the wheel” situation. Annnnoying. This is where JavaScript libraries come in.

JavaScript libraries are collections of pre-written JavaScript code that can be used for common JS tasks, allowing you to bypass the time intensive (and unnecessary) process of coding by hand. If there’s a run-of-the-mill JavaScript function that you keep needing to code (and that other developers before you have needed for their own projects) there’s probably a JS library to ease your pain. What is React JS used for, and why should you learn React JS? And is it better than other JavaScript libraries?

Why Do JavaScript Developers Use React JS?

React is a JavaScript library that specializes in helping developers build user interfaces, or UIs. In terms of websites and web applications, UIs are the collection of on-screen menus, search bars, buttons, and anything else someone interacts with to USE a website or app.

Note: readers often ask “is React JS frontend or backend?” The answer is: definitely frontend. You can keep this straight by remembering the “on screen” aspect of UIs—React is used exclusively for “client side” programming (building things that a user will see on screen in their browser window), which makes React JS a frontend library.

Before React JS, developers were stuck building UIs by hand with “vanilla JavaScript” (developer speak for the raw JavaScript language on its own) or with less UI-focused React predecessors like jQuery. That meant longer development times and plenty of opportunities for errors and bugs. So, in 2011, Facebook engineer Jordan Walke created React JS specifically to improve UI development.

JSX

At the heart of any basic website are HTML documents. Web browsers read these documents and display them on your computer, tablet, or phone as web pages. During this process, browsers create something called a Document Object Model (DOM), a representational tree of how the web page is arranged. Developers can then add dynamic content to their projects by modifying the DOM with languages like JavaScript.

JSX (short for JavaScript eXtension) is a React extension that makes it easy for web developers to modify their DOM by using simple, HTML-style code. And—since React JS browser support extends to all modern web browsers—JSX is compatible with any browser platform you might be working with.

This isn’t just a matter of convenience, though—using JSX to update a DOM leads to significant site performance improvements and development efficiency. How? It’s all about the next React feature, the Virtual DOM.

Virtual DOM

Considered the next biggest leap in web development since AJAX, the virtual DOM (short for Document Object Model) is the core reason why React enables the creation of fast, scalable web apps. Through React’s memory reconciliation algorithm, the library constructs a representation of the page in a virtual memory, where it performs the necessary updates before rendering the final web-page into the browser.

Why is Laravel so popular?
